Wild & Scenic Film Festival Kicks Off January 13 in Nevada City, CA

January 5th, 2012

With all of the bad environmental news bearing down on us, it’s important to stay inspired and motivated to keep fighting. That’s why we’re excited to support the Wild & Scenic Film Festival — the largest environmental film festival in the United States.

Wild & Scenic’s mission is to inspire people and unite communities to heal the earth — it’s a call to action. At Wild & Scenic, filmgoers are transformed into a congregation of committed activists, dedicated to saving our increasingly threatened planet. We show environmental and adventure films that illustrate the Earth’s beauty, the challenges facing our planet, and the work communities are doing to protect the environment. Through these films, Wild & Scenic both informs people about the state of the world and inspires them to take action. It’s also a time to celebrate

And if you need a bit of inspiration right now, here’s a few films to get you going…

“Your horse is a mirror to your soul, and sometimes you may not like what you see. Sometimes, you will.” So says Buck Brannaman, a true American cowboy and sage on horseback who travels the country for nine grueling months a year helping horses with people problems.

Dark Side of the Lens is one mans personal and heartfelt account of life as an ocean based photographer. This short film takes you on an eerie, stunning and moving journey amongst the epic oceanic grandeur of Irelands west coast.

In the high desert of South America, winter takes hold, devouring bleached bones and abandoned shacks. Into these most inhospitable of lands, a handful of drifters emerge from the whiteout, ready to cast their lot on forsaken peaks both merciless and magnificent. Venturing beyond the frontiers of most mountain films, Solitaire is backcountry skiing forged in the tradition of Western cinema.

Fly fisherman Bruce McGlenn and Elwha Klallam Tribal member Robert Elofson describe the anticipation building for the largest dam removal project in history on the Elwha River in Washington. Set on a beautiful summer evening, McGlenn sets out in search of Elwha trout trapped between the two soon-to-be-removed 100-year-old dams.

Awareness Into Action: Mountainfilm Kicks Off May 27!

May 25th, 2011

Mountainfilm Festival kicks off this week in our beautiful backyard of Telluride. Currently in its 33rd year, the Mountainfilm Festival is a four-day, six-senses experience of art, adventure, culture and the environment. It attracts filmmakers, photographers, conservationists, mountaineers and explorers from around the world. The theme for this year’s festival is “Awareness Into Action”. It’s amazing to get so many people that are so passionate about important causes together in one place and we’re excited to connect with amazing people and organizations that we support, like Timmy O’Neill, Shannon Galpin of Mountain2Mountain, James Q. Martin and Chris Kassar of Rios Libres, Dan Austin of 88Bikes and Sweetgrass Productions.

Below, we’ve included a couple trailers of films that we’ll be watching at this year’s festival.

The spirit celebrated at the festival may be of a vital eco-system or a fragile one. It may be of an endangered culture or of one courageous soul. It may be of a grassroots sustainability movement, the struggle of a species on the brink of extinction or captivation of the pure spirit of adventure. In whichever case, it is always a spirit that is unique, important and eminently laudable.

Along with thought-provoking, inspiring conversations, Mountainfilm Festival is packed with some killer events! Visit the Mountainfilm website for details and check back here, we’ll be live-blogging throughout the festival.

On The Road with Solitaire Episode 2: In the Cradle of the Cordillera

March 23rd, 2011

In the high desert of South America, winter takes hold, devouring bleached bones and abandoned shacks. Into these most inhospitable of lands, a handful of drifters emerge from the whiteout, ready to cast their lot on forsaken peaks both merciless and magnificent. Venturing beyond the frontiers of most mountain films, Solitaire is backcountry riding forged in the tradition of Western cinema. Born in the spires of Argentina’s legendary Las Lenas, a lonely two-year journey begins through an abandoned world, wandering the length of a continent from Peru’s Cordillera Blanca to Chilean Patagonia. Lost in the winds of snowbound badlands and the blizzards of primordial forests; seen from a horse’s saddle and a paraglider’s wings; ridden on ski and board and telemark…

Solitaire fuses western-inspired tales of backcountry gambles into landscapes never before visited on film.
