It’s that time! We excited to once again be attending the Sea Otter Classic, April 10-13, 2014! In addition to having the worthy mission of “making people’s lives better through participation in sport and recreation and through celebration of an active outdoor lifestyle,” Sea Otter is known for its incredible attendance — some 65,000 fellow bike folk (including professional riders, cycling enthusiasts, and the best bike gear companies) will be out and celebrating all things cycling at this weekend’s season opener in beautiful Monterey, California.
The Sea Otter Classic proved to be bigger than ever this year as the 22-year-old event brought together racers, fans and bike companies from around the globe to start the spring season with four days of festivities, races and all things bike. The attendance was staggering this year; it’s grown exponentially since 1991, when only about half a thousand gathered around the course, to nearly 65,000 people attending, all in the name of love for our two-wheeled friend, the bicycle.
This year, there were a variety of races from road races to downhill mountain biking. Sea Otter serves as the first race to kick off the season as top pros in North America and from around the world flock to Sea Otter. However, all of the events are also open to amateurs so if you want to race your bike, you have the chance!
One of the greatest things about Sea Otter is that it is open to the general public, which allows everyone to check out and demo different bike product for the upcoming season from a wide range of vendors. Osprey teamed up with Cambria Bike shop for a four-day sale of Osprey Hydration packs and demos.
Osprey mascot Talon also made an appearance at the event as he cheered on our Osprey athlete Macky Franklin and even had a photo shoot with the Sea Otter himself!
Start planning your trip here for next year as everyone is welcome!

With the onset of spring comes the Sea Otter Classic — known as North America’s cycling season opener — and we couldn’t be more excited. Here’s a bit more about the event, from the Sea Otter site itself:
Known as a sprawling and energetic “celebration of cycling”, Sea Otter is cycling’s North American season opener. Professional and amateur athletes alike make the annual pilgrimage to Sea Otter to participate in some of the sport’s most competitive and enduring events. Hundreds of pro cyclists, including national, world, and Olympic champions attend Sea Otter to race and meet with fans.
You can download the entire Sea Otter Classic event guide here, but the event will take place in Monterey, California from April 18th through the 21st, and is sure to be four action-packed days of bike demos, stunt shows and more. What’s more, we’ll be in Booth #100 (sharing the love with Cambria Bike Outfitters) with the complete new 2013 hydration and commute cycling lines available and on display. We’ll also be demoing packs for you try out, along with free pack fitting and sizing. Pro mountain biker Macky Franklin will also be at the booth, signing free posters between 3 and 5 p.m. on Saturday — and we’ll have ongoing fix-a-flat competitions with prizes for fastest times, as well as other fun games TBD!
We’ll see you in Monterey!
I am 11-year-old Jake Yackle and I live in Cortez, CO. For four years I’ve been XC Mountain Bike racing in the Four Corners States and for the past two seasons I’ve stepped up to race teenagers and adults in competition. My brother, Nye, and I traveled to the Sea Otter Classic last month to race against nationally ranked 13-14 year-old juniors that are closer to our age.
Before our XC race, each of the three consecutive days, we completed pre-rides on the dry, hot 14.5 mile Sea Otter course. The Osprey Verve 4′s ample water capacity and innovative lightweight design proved perfect to help keep us fresh and energetic for our second most important race of the season.
Whether you are a full-on competitive racer or someone who just enjoys a weekend ride with the family the Sea Otter Classic is the place to be April 19th-22nd. Monterey, California will play host to the 22nd Annual bicycle extravaganza known as the Sea Otter. Competitive events include the full gamut of mountain biking; cross-country, dual slalom, downhill, and short track. Road racers need not feel left out, there is a circuit race, a road race and a criterium to fill out the weekend. A cyclocross race has even been added for 2012.
The NRL Racing Team had a great time at the Sea Otter Classic visiting many of our wonderful sponsors like Osprey Packs. As usual, the venue was hustling and bustling with activity, showing that the bike community is a strong one.
For those of you who didn’t go, yes, you did miss out on a bunch of cool stuff. Here is a sampler.
- Brian Lopes vs Jared Graves on the Dual Slalom Finals. Both racers are multiple world champs. epic.
- Sea Otter Road Stage race! This was the first time this was held and it was a huge success.
- Awesome sneak peeks at the latest and greatest…but you already knew that.
I hope next year they have a pro mountain bike stage race with the following stages. This was an event in the past, but it is not at the current moment.
Thursday = Individual TT of around 20 minutes. gives seeding for STXC Race call ups.
Friday = STXC Race
Saturday = XC Race
Sunday = Super D Race, Individual TT style.
All around, a super fun time! Look forward to it again next year.

Over the weekend Osprey made its debut at one of the largest bike consumer and racing events in North America, the Sea Otter Classic. The reception to our hydraulics packs was outstanding. Cyclists from all areas including mountain, road and BMX, as well as an overwhelming amount of industry and media folks came by the Osprey booth to learn about our innovative Raptor and Manta series.
Over and over, comments on the features of these packs surfaced, many impressed by the LidLock™ helmet carry, the magnetic sternum strap for easy access and location of the bite valve and the ingenuity of the HydraForm™ and HydraLock™ reservoir compartment. These features have caught the attention of riders – they are surprised and delighted by our new take on hydration packs, an area that has been somewhat stagnant for many years.
Folks streamed by the tent constantly, on bike and on foot, and the buzz on our packs spread quickly. For those of you who haven’t been to Sea Otter, the sights and sounds were all about biking, with announcers giving play by play action of the dual slalom, crits and much more. Being up-close to the downhill and slalom was awesome–the skills on display from riders from all over the world were incredible. We tried to take in what we could; this is the place to showcase product, and even being a cyclist, it was still a little overwhelming. Afternoon reprieves came from Bike Mag and SoloSports Punta San Carlos (a baja bike mecca featured in Anthill Production’s Follow Me which premiered during the Sea Otter Classic event) crews’ coronas, a good opportunity to glean a little knowledge of what was hot (…see next month’s magazine for more!).
Our debut at Sea Otter was a success and we’d like to think that we brought a bit of Colorado sunshine with us along with our hydration packs. It was the first time in years that it’s been sunny and nice. See you next year!
