We’ll see you at Red Rock!
It’s always hard to write about rock climbing when you are ripping powder in a new bowl, or to write about skiing when you are latticing hand jams up granite. This year, I put myself on spring break to do both activities, type about neither, and then come home to the poodle and the computer.
I’ve spent countless season shifts in Red Rocks. For the past fifteen years it’s been the place to either jump-start or wrap up the year’s era of rock climbing. Spring has always been my favorite time. It’s when the green grass pokes through the sandy soil and softens the desert for the moment before you step on a barrel cactus. Spring is when the edges hurt your fingers because you’ve let them grow soft in your ice climbing gloves, when last year’s warm up is the biggest send of the current day, and when the sun feels exactly like thing you’ve been pining for all winter long.
We had a great weekend at the Red Rock Rendezvous, catching up with old friends, fitting in some climbing and mountain biking and of course soaking up the sweet, desert sun. If you couldn’t make it this year, mark your calendar for Red Rocks in 2013, they just keep getting better!
Believe it or not, today is the first day of spring. Our friends at Adventure Journal kicked it off with 5 Reasons to Celebrate Spring. Just a few reasons to count your blessings and celebrate the season…
It’s that time of year again… We’re revving up for one of our favorite events — Red Rock Rendezvous!
Kicking off this Friday, we’ve got a ton going on including: sponsored climbing clinics featuring Osprey athlete Majka Burhardt, sponsored mountain biking clinics featuring Osprey athlete Alison Gannett, a book signing with Majka Burhardt, Alison’s Green Trivia Quiz, daily sizing and fitting clinics, free technical hydration and climbing pack demos, great gear giveaways and much, much more!
The Osprey Brand Team, a group of 10 Osprey ambassadors reporting from the field at consumer outdoor events across the country over 2009, lands in Las Vegas, Nevada, for the Red Rocks Rendezvous. Here is brand team’er Carson Warner’s account of riding on a “magic bus”…
This past weekend, I was fortunate enough to take part in a sport climbing clinic at the Red Rock Rendezvous just outside of Las Vegas. From the outset I was thoroughly impressed with the well-organized nature of the event. I found the staff, comprised primarily of guides from the American Alpine Institute, to be extremely helpful and patient as they successfully conveyed hundreds of climbers throughout Red Rock Canyon.
My particular clinic was set at Magic Bus, a collection of 5.8 and 5.9 routes with names such as Ken Queasy and Electric Koolaid. No one I spoke with could offer any explanation for the psychedelic nomenclature, but whatever floats your boat. Kevin Wilkinson, the instructor for my clinic and a sponsored athlete, was awesome to say the least. Kevin detailed climbing intricately enough to leave little to wonder and then adeptly demonstrated the techniques he described-including some poor ones he termed “bear on a ladder” and “penguin out of water.” Watching him take falls was, let’s say, interesting to someone new to the sport like myself.
In the end it was a free for all as the six of us students were released on the “Bus.” I climbed three of the routes, with Kevin and his two assistants providing guidance throughout. Overall it was a great day on the rock with fair weather and good company. I learned a great deal about climbing and was humbled by the knowledge and skill of the climbers I was privileged to be amongst. The Rendezvous was excellent and I can’t wait to return next year!
