Friday Round-Up: Love For The Wilderness + Inspiration in Images at 5Point + Mountainfilm

April 15th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. This month we’re devoting it to all things spring: celebrating sunshine, getting out on late afternoon trail runs and reminding ourselves that summer is just around the corner. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

In the clutter of the modern world, can wilderness still restore the human spirit? Our good friend Fitz Cahall sure thinks so. He and his wife, Becca, left behind their city life in Seattle for the wilderness… Weeks in the Sierras backpacking and climbing away the stresses and constant chatter of their daily grind. This film is less about the adventure and more about the path to finding that adventure and how that quenches the raw human need for wildness and wilderness. Watch and be inspired to get outside…

Friday Round-up: Taking Action for Bikes

March 11th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we just wrapped our “Instead of driving, I…” contest, we’ve decided to pay homage to human-powered transportation for all of March. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

After a great video shoot this week [the photo above gives you a little "behind the scenes" look at what we're up to... keep your eyes out for the video soon!] we’ve got bikes on the brain. Big time.

The National Bike Summit was hosted this week in Washington, D.C. with bike advocates and industry leaders converging upon the capital. Of course the popular quote of the week goes to Representative Earl Blumenauer, who kicked off things at the summit on Wednesday with his excellent opener:

“How many people are stuck in traffic right now on their way to ride a stationary bike at the gym?”

It’s a good question, and one that maybe elicits a little more contemplation as we look to the future of not only bike policy, but all of the issues that are tied to it, like health and environment.

Friday Roundup: A Year in 2 Minutes

February 11th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we’re still in the full swing of winter, we decided to pay homage by picking “snow” for our February theme. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

Seems like we’re all about the timelapses this week. And not just regular timelapses; year-long ones. On Tuesday we featured The Longest Way, a photo documentation of one man’s year in China. We put the question to our Facebook community asking them what they would choose to capture for an entire year if they could only pick one thing, which got us everything from birds to rail systems.

Someone else suggested snow, which got us thinking about this video: One Year in 2 Minutes. This is the third year that Eirik Solheim has documented the seasonal shifts of his back yard. You may have already seen one of his previous videos, but beyond the beauty and simplicity of this clip, it’s interesting to know how he went about making it. It’s no easy set up: Eirik hooked his SLR up to his computer and software that allowed him to take an image every 30 minutes for an entire year.

And because it’s in Norway, there’s plenty of snow.

If you’re into trying to pull one of these off yourself, you can learn how here.

Friday Round-Up: An Homage To Snow

February 4th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we’re still in the full swing of winter, we decided to pay homage by picking “snow” for our February theme. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

Snow. When we think of snow, we think of hiking for hours to find turns through deep powder. We think of standing atop a peak face up to catch thousands of snowflakes on our faces. We think of the smell… That unmistakable smell when a front is coming in. And sometimes words just don’t do that feeling justice, so we’ve picked out a couple of short videos to get you outside and on your own quest for snow.

Sometimes the search for what you want leads you to things you never knew you wanted. A short about a girl’s mission for snow from Red Reel Video.

Friday Round-Up: Bring on the Bikes!

October 29th, 2010

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we were so excited for the launch of our bike blog last month, we decided to continue with that theme for all of October. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

From Elephant Journal:

With bicycling infrastructure taking its sweet time to make it to American streets, some kids are taking things into their own hands. A group of high school students in Florida wake up early every morning to meet up and bike, as a group, to school.

“When I ride my bike, I feel better throughout the day. Like school is worth going to if I get to ride my bike.”

Some are there because they want to help the environment, others are psyched to be part of a sweet Florida bike posse (my words) and all love to ride their bikes.

“Riding your bike gives you so much freedom. You don’t have to wait for you bus. You don’t have to wait for your parents. It’s just you and your bike. You just pedal the speed you want.”

I found this over on Copenhagenize and all in all, it’s a sweet little video about a group of kids taking action to change their world. We could use a little more of this.

And we agree. We could use A LOT more of this!

So for our final bike-themed Friday Round-Up, we’ve decided to give you a couple more inspiring videos to get you on your bike…

Friday Round-Up: Rethinking, Repurposing and Rejoicing Over Bikes

October 22nd, 2010

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Rethinking

Think Europe’s ahead of the game on bike policy? Well San Francisco’s trying to catch up. David Chiu, the president of the Board of Supervisors, announced this week that the city wants the official target to be 20% of trips by 2020, which would be double the current target of 10% for this year.

But what does it take to change the transportation habits of a city? Start small. In fact 40% of U.S. urban travel is 2 miles or less, and 90% of those trips are by car. That means it’s smart to focus on policies and infrastructure that make it easier for people to do their everyday quick errands — going to the post office, grocery shopping, dropping off a book at the library — by bike. San Francisco’s commitment takes inspiration from the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s plan, “Connecting the City,” to create 27 miles of safe crosstown bike paths that would facilitate those shorter trips, certainly a step in the right direction.

What is your city doing to inspire more trips by two wheels instead of four?
