Summer Outdoor Retailer Recap

August 7th, 2013

If you’ve ever gone home from OR to a partner or roommate who’s never been, it can be tough to explain just why you’re so exhausted when you return. But if you’ve ever experienced the madness, fun and fluorescent lights of this show yourself, you know that it takes about a week’s time to recover fully from the happy hours, meetings and never-ending events. Maybe you’re in the recovery phase right now; maybe you missed the show and want to know what happened. Either way, here’s just a bit of what went down at this year’s epic Outdoor Retailer show!

The Infamous Stringdusters play for the 2013 American Rivers Tour Wednesday night.

Day One capped off with a performance from The Infamous Stringdusters at SLC’s Depot, which kicked off their American Rivers Tour, “an epic summer music adventure stopping through, and winding down, some of American’s wildest and most beloved rivers and surrounding communities.”

Osprey Stands up for the Colorado River!

Osprey’s Marketing Manager Gareth Martins shows support for the Colorado River, which supports 250,000 sustainable recreation industry jobs across the southwest. Day two’s Conservation Alliance Breakfast with Pete McBride taught us that” in 2013, American Rivers named the Colorado River the nation’s #1 most endangered river due to drought, over-allocation and climate change.” Visit www.StandUpForCoRiver.com to learn more about the campaign to save the Colorado.

Osprey Happy Hour prizes, giveaways and fun.

We had a great giveaway session of Rev packs at the Sheep Mountain Alliance Booth Party day one, and sold out on all special sales of Rev 6s to supportMountain Project throughout the show!

As always, the end of Summer OR can only mean one thing: it’s time to start the countdown to Winter OR. Ready, go!

Friday Round-Up: Telluride Blues and Brews Contest + Beats

September 2nd, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. It’s September and we’re living it up for all we’re worth this month to take advantage of these last days of summer. What is crucial to living it up in style? A really great playlist… so we’re dedicating this month to music. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

One of our favorite late summer events is Telluride Blues and Brews, a festival just a hop, skip and a boogie north of us here at Osprey HQ. We’re psyched to be a returning sponsor of the event and even more psyched to head to the festival in a couple of weeks to throw down with some incredible musicians.

In anticipation of the festival, we’ve decided to giveaway a festival pass along with some sweet Osprey travel gear! All you have to do, is answer a few trivia questions…

New River Rendezvous and Rapture

May 26th, 2011

A year ago Osprey asked me, “You doing the Rendezvous this year?”

My response: “There is absolutely nothing I want to do in West Virgina.”

So against my will, I packed up and headed North… or West. Whatever direction it is, it’s a long way from Jacksonville, Florida. Fast forward a year and there I was, round two. I figured my first Rendezvous was amazing, so #9 has to be better right? Once again, I wasn’t disappointed and though its fresh on the mind, it seems another Rendezvous has come and gone.

And to think, despite the uncharacteristically sun-filled skies, the cloud of Rapture almost ruined the show. If you’ve never heard of the Rendezvous, thumbed over it in a climbing mag, or had it on your bucket list for years, get out the calender and mark the dates now! Rarely does one find a place where the quality of the rock is outdone by the quality of the people. Maura, Kenny, and all the folks at Waterstone Outdoors deserve a huge thank you for their efforts. Can you imagine trying to provide dinner and breakfast to a thousand climbers? All the while holding comps, clinics, crash pad sumo, run & chug trail races, demos and late night dancing that can only be described as the Jersey Shore meets West Virginia.

Like always, I’m glad to be home but kind of miss the camping, climbing, music and good people from Fayetteville, WV and beyond. I probably won’t make it back to West Virginia before next year but I’m certainly looking forward to the 10th Edition of the Rendezvous. If its anything like the 9th, I might just stay awhile.

Side note: The only downside to the weekend was the theft of samples and demos from several of the vendors on the final evening of the event. La Sportiva, Evolve and Trango all had product stolen from their booths sometime Saturday night.

Remember this: The world is a big place but the climbing community is small. Karma is a bitch… especially on your next lead fall.
