Denmark’s Bicycle Superhighways Offer Fastest Transportation Option

July 19th, 2012

In Copenhagen, Denmark, half of its residents already commute to work by bike. While this may seem like a feat in and of itself—and while it is a pretty remarkable one at that—Copenhagen city planners don’t want to stop there. According to an article in The New York Times, the head of the city’s “traffic planning section,” Brian Hansen, says this: “We are very good, but we want to be better.”

What’s better than a Danish music video about cycling in Copenhagen? Not a whole lot.

Lane Love: Copenhagen

March 14th, 2011

Ah, Copenhagen. A bike lover’s dream city.

In fact, in all of Denmark, 36% of adults ride their bike to work at least once a week, and 44% of Danish households don’t own a car.

Copenhagen alone has over 340 kilometers of bike lanes. Which is why we have a serious crush on it.

It’s winter, which means it’s snow time. And that’s no excuse for not riding. Just look how beautifully they do it in Copenhagen. Makes you want to move there doesn’t it?

Friday Round-Up: Bring on the Bikes!

October 29th, 2010

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we were so excited for the launch of our bike blog last month, we decided to continue with that theme for all of October. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

From Elephant Journal:

With bicycling infrastructure taking its sweet time to make it to American streets, some kids are taking things into their own hands. A group of high school students in Florida wake up early every morning to meet up and bike, as a group, to school.

“When I ride my bike, I feel better throughout the day. Like school is worth going to if I get to ride my bike.”

Some are there because they want to help the environment, others are psyched to be part of a sweet Florida bike posse (my words) and all love to ride their bikes.

“Riding your bike gives you so much freedom. You don’t have to wait for you bus. You don’t have to wait for your parents. It’s just you and your bike. You just pedal the speed you want.”

I found this over on Copenhagenize and all in all, it’s a sweet little video about a group of kids taking action to change their world. We could use a little more of this.

And we agree. We could use A LOT more of this!

So for our final bike-themed Friday Round-Up, we’ve decided to give you a couple more inspiring videos to get you on your bike…

You’re Safer on a Bike Than on Your Couch

October 13th, 2010

Every Wednesday on Ditch Your Car we’ll be bringing you just another reason to spend more time on two wheels. Be it a photo, a statistic or an inspirational video, we want to keep reminding you about why riding is great!

Here’s an intriguing pro-bicycle campaign. Earlier this year the City of Copenhagen published this ad which reads:

You won’t believe it… You’re safer on the bicycle than on the sofa!

Lack of daily exercise is harmful to your health, while physical activity keeps your body healthy.

Cycling extends your life – daily excercise for minimum 30 minutes extends your life with up to five years.

Although promoting active transportation, focusing on the exercise benefits of riding your bike, the ad actually comes from the city’s public health department.

Simple and to the point. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
