Osprey Starts off Bike Month in the Big Apple

May 10th, 2013

‘Tis the season to celebrate two wheels! May is National Bike Month, and there was no better way to kick it off than with the The Bike New York event this past weekend, supported by sponsor and dear friends of ours, Eastern Mountain Sports and the NYC Department of Transportation.

New York commuters and individuals from around the world came to Pier 36 to check out the latest trends and to prep themselves with gear for their ride in the 35th Annual Five Boro Bike Tour in which the cyclists overrun the streets of New York and visit the cities that make up the surrounding areas of the Big Apple. Over 30,000 riders participated in the Sunday ride!

Take a minute to check out some photos and highlights from the trip above.

**We would like to highlight the third picture on the right, this here is Randy. Randy had never heard of Osprey and as a native of New York. Randy spends all her time commuting on her bike, getting from point A to point B throughout the city. Randy had a pack with little support for her back and the necessary things she carried on her commute. Randy told our sales rep, George (in photo) “if you can fit all the things I carry, including the old pack, in this Momentum 34, I will buy it on the spot.” Well, truth be told, George did so, and Randy was welcomed to the Osprey family with open arms!

Rediscovering Madison: Two Weeks Without a Car

September 21st, 2011

I have been driving my car and learned to depend on it for almost every day since I turned 16. Two weeks ago my eyes were opened when my old Subaru Forester broke down. I pushed it into a parking spot off the street and began walking, biking and using mass transit to get from point A to B.

I live in Madison which is a bike friendly town, but I just never knew how much it was until now. I have biked to the bar, biked to the restaurant, biked to see friends, biked to a car dealership… I used to only get out my bike when I wanted to get in a workout and put some miles down on a backcountry road, but now I have learned that I want a bike in my life every day. I want to bike everyday!

I get out see the sun, listen to the wind and experience Madison in a slower but more intimate feel then I did before while driving. This new experience has also brought me to places that I have never been before and away from the suburbs, away from the chain stores, away from the 10,000 sq. foot grocery stores. I am buying local, I am eating local, and experiencing what this city is really all about.

I grew up in Madison. I moved back after college and never knew the East side of town like I do now, all of which I am still learning via my bike.

Lane Love: Yarn Bombing Vancouver Bike Lanes

June 20th, 2011

Colourful bike racks in downtown Vancouver

You learn new things all the time, and today was no exception. Did you know it was International Yarn Bombing Day a couple of weekends ago? This occasion was put to good use in Vancouver where the bike racks along one lane were beautified with yarn.

Have a lane that you love? Send us a photo! You can post it to our Facebook page, shoot us an email at blog[at]ospreypacks[dot]com or upload to our Flickr group and we might just feature it here on our weekly photo feature, Lane Love.

Friday Round-Up: And The Winner Is…

March 4th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we just wrapped our “Instead of driving, I…” contest, we’ve decided to pay homage to human-powered transportation for all of March. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

Last month, we asked our fans how they they got around — without driving — and we were flooded with awesome responses. So, without further ado, below, we’ve listed out the winners of the “Instead of driving, I…” contest. Congratulations to the winners! Watch out for a cool, new video on the topic coming soon. And to everyone out there who chooses to use their own power to get them from place to place: thank you for leading the way. Let’s keep it up!

Friday Round-Up: Bring on the Bikes!

October 29th, 2010

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. Since we were so excited for the launch of our bike blog last month, we decided to continue with that theme for all of October. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

From Elephant Journal:

With bicycling infrastructure taking its sweet time to make it to American streets, some kids are taking things into their own hands. A group of high school students in Florida wake up early every morning to meet up and bike, as a group, to school.

“When I ride my bike, I feel better throughout the day. Like school is worth going to if I get to ride my bike.”

Some are there because they want to help the environment, others are psyched to be part of a sweet Florida bike posse (my words) and all love to ride their bikes.

“Riding your bike gives you so much freedom. You don’t have to wait for you bus. You don’t have to wait for your parents. It’s just you and your bike. You just pedal the speed you want.”

I found this over on Copenhagenize and all in all, it’s a sweet little video about a group of kids taking action to change their world. We could use a little more of this.

And we agree. We could use A LOT more of this!

So for our final bike-themed Friday Round-Up, we’ve decided to give you a couple more inspiring videos to get you on your bike…
