#OspreyAt40: Our 40th Anniversary Celebration Continues!

April 2nd, 2014

OspreyAt40_Montage

When we launched our #OspreyAt40 photo contest earlier this year, we knew we’d see some amazing photos of your many adventures, travels and treks — but we were blown away by the number of phenomenal photos submitted by so many loyal Osprey fans. Thank you for sharing your memories with us — we’re honored to have been part of your hikes, backpacking trips, MTB rides, snow days, city walks, summits, sojourns and every other adventure you’ve had with an Osprey Pack on your back.

We’re going to continue to celebrate our 40th Anniversary throughout the year — so please stay tuned for other fun contests and prizes. In May, we’ll be premiering the full-length documentary “Osprey Packs: 40 Years in the Making.” In the meantime, below are the final winners selected by our internal judges for Round 4 of #OspreyAt40. (Or visit our gallery of all of the 40 winning #OspreyAt40 photos here.)

Thank you again for sharing your photos with us and for celebrating our 40th Anniversary!

Osprey tackles Massive Mountain

July 3rd, 2013

Summit of Mount Massive - 14,428 Feet

From our offices in Cortez, Colorado we can see the cool, alpine peaks rising from the dry, high desert landscape.  As the days of summer get warmer, these peaks become more and more inviting as a place to gain some altitude and enjoy cooler temperatures and spectacular vistas.  When our Spring 2014 product samples arrived in early June, we decided it was time to put together a high country trip that would give us the opportunity to do a little product testing.  We settled on Mt. Massive, which happens to be the second highest peak in Colorado at 14,428 feet.  This was a bit of a journey from the office but we decided the trip to Leadville was worth it.  Six of us plus two dogs embarked on the climb and all were able to summit.  We had a great time and put in some quality time with the new packs which performed flawlessly.  Here is a photo tour of our amazing trip:

Mile… Mile & A Half: An Interview With David and Kelly Finlay

August 29th, 2012

The original Colorado home for Osprey is the town of Dolores, Colorado located about 11 miles north of our headquarters in Cortez. It’s a quiet town of about 900 people with what nightlife there is, centered on the local brewpub. As a result, most Dolores residents are connected to the “day” life which primarily involves outdoor activities. I’ve lived here for 13 years and feel blessed that I can mountain bike or ski out my door depending on season, walk my dog next to the river or journey less than an hour for epic and wild desert or mountain adventures. Last summer my neighbors, Dave and Kelly Finlay informed me they were journeying a bit further for their summer adventure—a thru-hike of the Muir Trail. Dave and Kelly are serious backpackers, having hiked the Colorado Trail 4 years prior, so they spent some time with me lining out their Osprey packs to maximize fit and performance for their California adventure.

Upon their return, I enjoyed an incredible slideshow of their journey on the Muir Trail. They also told me that they had hiked most of the trail with a film crew that was making a movie about the trail. As it happened, just about everyone they ended up hiking with was wearing Osprey packs. This certainly got my attention. Here was a film dominated by our product with no intentional product placement and here was a film about an iconic Sierra trail—the mountain range where Ospreys first started hitting the trail in 1974. Now a year later and following countless hours of editing, the film is nearing its completion and in the midst of a Kickstarter campaign. I recently sat down with Dave and Kelly to chat about their thoughts on the adventure and the film.

Life at Elevation: Navigating the Cordillera Blanca Range with 20

May 17th, 2012
I have been a part of a variety of backpacking experiences. Time and again, it is assured the group will bond in a unique way. The backcountry strips us of traditional interactions, of blinking lights and honking horns. Give it 48 hours… then, you start adjusting to the efficient method of packing, and hoisting your pack, making a pillow out of your down jacket and remembering to look up, and around to the mountains and streams, instead of simply the feet that are transporting you there.

Friday Round Up: A Family Affair

April 6th, 2012

We see a lot of great photos throughout the week. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each week and highlighting one each Friday on our blog to inspire our weekend adventures. We call it the Osprey Round Up.

Do you remember your first backpacking trip? Whether you were 2 years old or 20, I’m betting it had a lasting impression—it definitely did for us. We believe that the more people, especially children, that we can get outside, the more people we will have protecting our remaining wild places. That’s why we love seeing families out on the trail. And if they happen to be wearing all Osprey Packs, well that’s an added bonus.

Loving this shot from Jason Boblitt on Facebook:

Here’s to hitting the trail with your family and friends this weekend. Happy Friday!

Friday Round Up: Canyonlands National Park

March 30th, 2012

We see a lot of great photos throughout the week. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each week and highlighting one each Friday on our blog to inspire our weekend adventures. We call it the Osprey Round Up.

We are fortunate to have Canyonlands National Park right in our backyard… so when David Taus posted this spring photo from Canyonlands National Park on our Facebook page, we knew we had to share. And we know the feeling of anticipation and excitement that comes with a trip to the canyons.

The Needles. My favorite and oldest Osprey Packs (the big green silhouette from ’97!) One Alpacka Raft. One beaten up copy of Edward Abbey’s Desert Solitaire. Volker Neumann, Tim O’Shea, Peter Hoagland, Nick Novelli. Three weeks away.

Have a great time, David and friends! Happy Friday!

Prototype Testing Osprey Packs

March 21st, 2012

One of the many benefits of our location here in Cortez, Colorado is year-round biking, hiking and backpacking. I can drive an hour and a half to test ski packs in Telluride or drive two hours and find myself in the canyons of southern Utah for a day hike or extended backpacking trip. The weekend before last, Osprey held a product testing trip. Eight sales reps from each region of the US were hosted by our CEO, Sales Director, Product Line Manager and myself.
