Winter Call (Summer Ski Apology)

December 12th, 2012

Majka Burhardt and her father outside of El Bolson, Argentina.

Winter Call (Summer Ski Apology) was originally posted on Majka’s Blog.

I am not a hoarder. Or at least not of material things. But I might have to confess to being a recent hoarder of snow. And for that, I’m sorry.

Today, December 11th, 2012, I took a hike in the White Mountains and watched yesterday’s thin layer of white turn to clear liquid in the span of an hour. My skis—touring, downhill, classic and skate—are lined up in my garage ready to go. Like most of the northern hemisphere I am ready to ski. But I might be the reason why so few of us are actually getting to shred the gnar.

Here is my confession. I went south to ski and now the north is paying.

Joshua Johnson aka “Joshywashington” traveled through Argentina earlier this year. Joshua is a Seattle-based travel blogger always on the lookout for the next journey. He also heads up MatadorTV. Read more from Joshua on his blog

Photos have a way of bringing you back to a place… to an experience. When looking at my photos from a recent trip to Patagonia, these five bright, red images brought me right back to my journey. To me they tell a compelling story of my two weeks in Patagonia, one of earth’s most desolate, colorful and coveted travel destinations.

To Drink From a Glacier in Argentina

April 6th, 2011

Forget bottled-at-the-source. How about dunking your entire face into the source!?

In the Andes near El Bolson, Argentina

David and I woke to a drizzle that shimmered in sideways curtains. The camp grounds of Refugio Heilo Azul stirred with hikers waking, packing, coming and going.

On The Road With Solitaire: Episode 1

February 22nd, 2011

In the high desert of South America, winter takes hold, devouring bleached bones and abandoned shacks. Into these most inhospitable of lands, a handful of drifters emerge from the whiteout, ready to cast their lot on forsaken peaks both merciless and magnificent. Venturing beyond the frontiers of most mountain films, Solitaire is backcountry riding forged in the tradition of Western cinema. Born in the spires of Argentina’s legendary Las Lenas, a lonely two-year journey begins through an abandoned world, wandering the length of a continent from Peru’s Cordillera Blanca to Chilean Patagonia. Lost in the winds of snowbound badlands and the blizzards of primordial forests; seen from a horse’s saddle and a paraglider’s wings; ridden on ski and board and telemark…

Solitaire fuses western-inspired tales of backcountry gambles into landscapes never before visited on film.

“On The Road with Solitaire” is a 12-part webisode series following Sweetgrass Productions in the making of their new 2-year project, the South American backcountry ski and snowboarding film “Solitaire.” New episodes will be released on the 21st of every month. Stay tuned…

Over The River and into The Desert ~ Cachi, Argentina

February 16th, 2011

Joshywashington crosses river wash outs with a coca-loving driver to frolic among gigantic cacti in Northern Argentina.

The driver is 62, red eyed and and in need of a shave.

The vehicle is a hopeful, dented and clumsy KIA that seems ill equipped for the road before us. Especially so as we approach the first of many washouts where a river spills over the road and in some cases carries it away.

The car idles as we wait for the truck in front of us to brave the washout.
