Friday Round Up: Sunny Rafting on the Crystal River

April 27th, 2012

We see a lot of great photos throughout the week. So, we thought it was high time we started rounding up some of our faves each week and highlighting one on Friday to inspire weekend adventures. We call it the Osprey Round Up.

It’s Friday and the sun is shining in Colorado. Our friends up at 5Point Film Festival took a few hours off to raft on the Crystal River near Carbondale with local guides from Elk Mountain Expeditions. “We’re pumped to be stoked,” Sarah Kuck told us. We hope you all are too.

Happy Friday!

5Point Film Festival Kicks Off In Carbondale, CO April 26

April 19th, 2012

2012 5Point Film Festival from 5Point Film Festival on Vimeo.

Since the 5Point Film Festival launched five years ago, the event has welcomed and honored many of the world’s most celebrated adventurers. Founded as a community that aims to stoke the passion for adventure through film, art and live performances, the festival has become a place to gather around the proverbial fire and tell stories of journeys past and those on the horizon.

“The depth of storytelling at this year’s festival is phenomenal — the audience is in for quite a ride,” Justin Clifton, 5Point executive director, said. “From the desert floor of the Grand Canyon to the heights of Saser Kangri II to the remote waters in the heart of Africa to the untold stories of human passion, 5Point is offering up an amazing collection of films in 2012.”

Friday Round-Up: Powder, The Gift of Sight and a Free Trip to 5Point

March 16th, 2012

Deep thoughts in BC... Photo: Gareth Martins, Osprey marketing director via Instagram

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each week. We call it the Osprey Round Up.

Osprey’s marketing director, Gareth Martins, has spent the last week in British Columbia’s Selkirk Mountains with Evan Stevens. Between Facebook photos and video blog posts, the two have made it pretty clear that they’ve been finding plenty of powder despite the sketchy conditions. Thanks for rubbing it in, guys. Stay safe out there!

“It requires a rare vision, perhaps one bordering on delusion, to perceive the possibility of change in the monochromatic world of the hope-blind.” — Timmy O’Neill in Elevation Outdoors.

In another corner of the world, Osprey athlete Timmy O’Neill is in Kathmandu, Nepal for the next two months studying to be an ophthalmic tech at the Tilganga Eye Institute working on behalf of the Himalayan Cataract Project and Dr. Geoff Tabin. After his stint in Nepal, Timmy will travel with Dr. Tabin to Ethiopia to put his newly learned skills to work. Read more about what Timmy is doing with the Himalayan Cataract Project in his recent story in Elevation Outdoors.

Also exciting news this week a little closer to our own backyard, Polartec launched a contest giving away an all expenses paid trip to the 5Point Film Festival next month. Free airfare and travel, lodging at Avalanche Ranch Resort, $500 and Patagonia and Polartec gear… it doesn’t get much better than that. All you have to do is enter. Good luck, we hope to see you at 5Point!

Have a great weekend and happy Friday!

Take Action: Saving the Colorado and Free-Flowing Rivers

February 16th, 2012

The Colorado River from the book "Chasing Water". Photo by Pete McBride

Last year, we watched photojournalist Pete McBride‘s film Chasing Water at 5Point Film Festival. We always had an idea of the dire straits on the Colorado River, but the images in the film and accompanying book made it impossible to forget. Our mighty Colorado River that cut the Grand Canyon, that flows powerfully through the western states has been pushed, pulled and sucked dry — so much that it rarely reaches the ocean.

“Scrapertown”

February 15th, 2012

Ditch Your Car to provide youth in crime ridden cities an outlet of fun, education, love and life. We first saw “Scrapertown” at last year’s 5Point Film Festival in Carbondale, Co.  Baybe Champ was on the scene to talk about this film and to bring an inner city point of view, to an otherwise very white audience.  As a result, we were all in awe of his story and his grace; overwhelmed with love for what Champ has dedicated his life to and humbled by our own lives.  So today, we wanted to post this film to remind each of you, that there is always an alternative to the life that is seemingly ‘dealt’ to you.

The requirements of becoming a member of the Scraper Bike Team:

“In order to become a member of the Original Scraper Bike Team, you must: Be a resident of Oakland, CA. Be at least 7 years old or older. Retain A 3.0 Grade Point Average (GPA), Create your own Scraper Bike…(It Has To Be Amazing, Or Else You Can’t Ride.) A single-file line when riding. After 10 rides The Scraper Bike King and his Captains will decide if your bike is up to standards and if you can follow simple guidelines. After your evaluation we will consider you a member and honor you with an Original Scraper Bike Team Shirt. Only worn when Mobbin’ Stay posted to our website for all upcoming Scraper Bike Rides…” — The Scraper Bike King

A film by Drea Cooper & Zackary Canepari

Every Wednesday on Ditch Your Car we’ll be bringing you just another reason to spend more time on two wheels. Be it a photo, a statistic or an inspirational video, we want to keep reminding you about why riding is great!

Calling All Filmmakers: 5Point Film + Mountainfilm Festival Submission Deadlines Fast Approaching!

February 2nd, 2012

We’re proud to support two Colorado-based film festivals, 5Point Film Festival in Carbondale and Mountainfilm Festival in Telluride. Although it’s hard to believe, we’ve already rounded the corner into February and spring time is coming up quick, so that means that all of you filmmakers out there better hop to it! Both 5Point and Mountainfilm submission deadlines are fast approaching. Here’s what you need to know to make sure you get your film submitted in time…

5Point Film Festival submission deadline is February 3, but sources say that we’ll see an extension for all of you who need a bit more time to finish off your film. Bonus: no submission fees. The folks at 5Point say, “We believe in your work, not submission fees.” Check out submission guidelines here.

Mountainfilm just announced an extended submission deadline of February 17, so filmmakers have a couple more weeks to spare. Please visit Mountainfilm’s website for submission fees and guidelines.

And don’t miss out on the festivals, coming up in April and May!

Friday Round-Up: Love For The Wilderness + Inspiration in Images at 5Point + Mountainfilm

April 15th, 2011

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. This month we’re devoting it to all things spring: celebrating sunshine, getting out on late afternoon trail runs and reminding ourselves that summer is just around the corner. Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

In the clutter of the modern world, can wilderness still restore the human spirit? Our good friend Fitz Cahall sure thinks so. He and his wife, Becca, left behind their city life in Seattle for the wilderness… Weeks in the Sierras backpacking and climbing away the stresses and constant chatter of their daily grind. This film is less about the adventure and more about the path to finding that adventure and how that quenches the raw human need for wildness and wilderness. Watch and be inspired to get outside…
