Rippin Chix Steeps Camp at Crystal Mountain

February 20th, 2013

Crystal Mountain, Washington is one of those iconic ski areas that many skiers would wish to call home. Its got it all – steeps, trees, airs, accessibility to a big city (Seattle), and best of all for us last weekend – POWDER!

25 KEEN Rippin Chix students and five coaches, including free skiing champions such as Kasha Rigby, Karen Reader, Susan Medville and Molly Baker all converged to Crystal February 9th and 10th for a steeps camp run by founder and Osprey Ambassador Alison Gannett.

Gals attended from all over and ranged in age from 14 to 59. Goals varied from overcoming past tumbles, to building confidence and skills, to learning Alison’s five fun ways to catch air. Four ability groups formed, with the “lower” group working introduction skills for steeps and the upper group charging out the gate demanding to “jump off more stuff.”

The hardest part about running Rippin Chix is always my worry that gals will push it too far and too fast. I have always believed that the best way to jump off a cliff is to learn how to jump a snowball on the groomer. Once the skills are solid, then the terrain can be pushed, and always on stuff with lots of runout room should things not go as planned. Crystal Mtn is perfect for this, with lots of fun north-facing powder bowls and zillions of chutes that fan out into big aprons. Luckily I had nothing to worry about, as these gals were fast learners and keen students.

Big smiles abounded on Sunday as we organized a group introduction and shared what everyone’s favorite skill was from Saturday. While I have adored my PSIA and race coaching training, I’ve never connected with terms like “functional tension,” and instead teach gals things like “squeeze the thong,” get rid of your velcro butt or tyrannosaurus arms and instead focus on “pouring the wine” and smushing the grapes.

Sad to say, we had quite a few flurries and clouds that prevented much video for this particular camp, so I’m going to attach the video from this year’s KEEN Rippin Chix Steeps Camp at Silverton Mtn, Colorado:

Next up on the powder seeking agenda? The Kootenay Coldsmoke Powder Festival located in the heart of the legendary Selkirk Mountains at Whitewater resort near Nelson British Columbia, Canada. See you there?!

Gender Differences: Teaching Mountain Biking with Osprey at Red Rock Rendezvous

April 23rd, 2012

Teaching mountain biking skills seems so straightforward… I’ve been teaching women during my Rippin Chix Camps with Osprey Packs since 2003. Watching the confidence build and the fears fade changes women’s lives, and not only in skiing, biking and surfing. It permeates into family, jobs and dealing with whatever life throws your way. At Red Rocks Rendezvous, Jeff Fox, the bike marketing manager for Osprey, and myself were in charge of teaching men’s and women’s mountain bike camps. Most of these participants are climbers, looking to do something in addition to all the amazing rock climbing camps at the event.

KEEN Rippin Chix Steeps Camp at Silverton with Osprey Packs

Silverton brings me back to what skiing was like as a kid — no frills, no heat, no fancy food, but great skiing with great friends. Again this year, we had several feet of powder… I’m knocking on wood as we speak.

Osprey Athlete Update – Alison Gannett

August 7th, 2009

Such a busy summer – Rippin Chix Bike Camps, my Global Cooling Tour to help save our snow and our planet, my personal sustainability initiatives, my CROP workshops for businesses working to systematically green their acts while focusing on saving money, planning a ski expedition to the highest Andean peaks of Colombia, and working to plan my ski events for this upcoming winter. whew. makes me tired just typing it.

I did manage to squeeze in some bike races, in between it all, with my Talon 5.5, of course – and even won one of my new favorite races, in 5 1/2 hours – The Fat Tire 40 (part of Crested Butte’s Fat Tire Bike Week).

I’ve added 9 Rippin Chix bike camps to the ever popular Rippin Chix Steep skiing Camps, and have been packed with gals learning to tear it up all summer. I just love watching chix learn to conquer their fears and learn rad skills. If only I had been lucky enough to learn that way. My learning experience involved the motto “its a good ride if you come back bloody”…..

My Global Cooling Tour has continued in full swing – with events all over the country and working with many retailers, film festivals, events, governments, and businesses on solutions to climate change. My latest personal goal for the Tour is to “walk the talk” by bike commuting to and from each event when possible. My east coast bike route involved 9 stops in 7 states, and a 780 mile ride between all the events. My Osprey Talon 11 carried my computer all along the way – and you thought it was just a hydration pack!

Speaking of personal goals, my latest quest is to reduce my food carbon footprint, so I’ve been learning to bake bread, preserve food, and grow lots of food. Haven’t been to the grocery store since February, and am growing indoors and outside year round at 9,000 feet.

Osprey is sponsoring my upcoming Rippin Chix bike camps – If you are in the Crested Butte Area, and want some fun in September, www.alisongannett.com

I’ll be doing the Climate Ride from NYC to Washington, DC in September, working on meaningful legislation for climate disruption. Love to see some Osprey fans along the way. I might be speaking at REI or EMS while back there….
