MoveShake is a series of films that tells personal stories of movers and shakers creating positive change in the world around them. Follow MoveShake on Facebook to catch all of the updates on new installments and more.

In the latest MoveShake installment, Alexandria Bombach of Red Reel tells the story of Gregg Treinish, founder of Adventurers and Scientists for Conservation (ASC). ASC is an organiztion that works to change the way that people spend their time outside while creating “an army of citizen-scientists” who can gather the information necessary to prove to decision makers that the right management choices must be made.

Last week, the MoveShake crew went grizzly bear tracking in the Tabacco Roots in Montana. Turns out if solid evidence of grizzlies in the area is found, there could be stronger protection of this beautiful area. What’s more, this week ASC is taking inner-city kids from West Oakland middle school to the Desolation Wilderness for pika monitoring with their Osprey-donated packs! The photos here are just a sneak peak from the latest MoveShake installment, but the upcoming film will certainly be worth waiting for. “219 miles and 25 days to complete the John Muir Trail. Each day another story, another achievement and another photo. The smiles sometimes wavered, but my Osprey backpack never did.”

We always dreamt of creating a documentary to share the adventure and grandeur of the John Muir Trail, and after nine years our eclectic group of five finally stepped into the California wilderness. Truth is, that first day on the trail, July 10, 2011, we didn’t know what all to expect. It was a record snow year, which in and of itself presented a formidable challenge. We had no idea whether we’d be able to overcome the endless obstacles set out before us, let alone capture enough footage along the way to produce a feature-length film.

With a bit of luck and a lot of perseverance, we finished all 211 miles of the JMT (as well as the 8 miles required to return to civilization after summiting Mount Whitney). As we had cautiously hoped, we left the trail with more than just sore feet. Our packs were often ridiculously heavy and the amount of work was no small task, but we truly exceeded our own expectations in capturing the images, sounds, and experiences of the trail.

Since the 5Point Film Festival launched five years ago, the event has welcomed and honored many of the world’s most celebrated adventurers. Founded as a community that aims to stoke the passion for adventure through film, art and live performances, the festival has become a place to gather around the proverbial fire and tell stories of journeys past and those on the horizon.

“The depth of storytelling at this year’s festival is phenomenal — the audience is in for quite a ride,” Justin Clifton, 5Point executive director, said. “From the desert floor of the Grand Canyon to the heights of Saser Kangri II to the remote waters in the heart of Africa to the untold stories of human passion, 5Point is offering up an amazing collection of films in 2012.”

Unless you’ve been living in a deep, dark cave… You may have noticed that there is a lot of cool stuff going on out there. So, we thought it was high-time we started rounding up some of our faves each Friday. Every month, we’ll be choosing a theme that fits with the Osprey lifestyle. We kicked off the month with 5 Point Film Festival, and we’re counting down the days to Mountainfilm in Telluride, so this month we’re devoting it to… you guessed it: film! Welcome to the Osprey Friday Round-Up!

Since it’s National Bike Month, we figured showcasing a bike-centric film would be appropriate.

We were truly inspired this week by Scrapertown, a film about the Scraper Bike movement in Oakland, California.

Talk about using bikes to empower youth. “The Scraper Bike Movement seeks to capture the creativity of youth living within dangerous communities. It gives them a positive outlet that is fun, educational, and promotes healthy lifestyles. The Scraper Bike Movement offers youth a sustainable group of peers that is positive and motivating.”

Performance art at 5 Point Film Festival, Jeremy Collins works on his painting while animation fills the big screen. I'm not sure how this will translate to a canned film, but the performance was unbelievably good and won 'Best of Festival' via WildSnow.com

If something terrifies you… that probably means you should do it. When we think back to our experiences at the 5 Point Film Festival this past weekend, that is the nugget that we find clenched in our memory. Delivered perfectly, imaginatively and brilliantly by climber and artist Jeremy Collins, the live performance set in a letter to Jeremy’s son, quenched our thirst for adventure, emotion, love, inspiration and… passion for living.

For 10 years, a dream lingered, but the clutter of modern living pressed it into submission. Still clinging to the pull of wild places and adventure, Fitz and Becca Cahall revived their youthful vision of summits and faint trails by abandoning work and the city for the wilderness. The Love Letter follows a pair of climbers in search of new and classic routes along the difficult to reach stretches of the Sierra spine, focusing not just on the summits themselves, but the process of attaining them. In the clutter of the modern world, can wilderness still restore the human spirit? We would like to think so. This is our love letter to wild places…

Mountainfilm Tour 2011 Elks Theater, April 1-2

Once in a while you need to step back, pause and re-boot. Look at the world around you and the everyday life that each of us lives. It is so easy to get caught up in the day to day craziness. We get busy with careers, friends, obligations and adventures — and sometimes we forget to just stop and see what is going on and really enjoy what is around us.

This past weekend we took a break. We attended Mountainfilm on Tour. It is a celebration of what is around us: life, adventure, nature, mountains and the thrill of enjoying it. We attended the tour in our home town of Rapid City. For the third year in a row, Mountainfilm’s tour event acted as a fundraiser for the Rapid City Urban Orchard Project, an organization that works with the Department of Parks and Recreation to plant apple trees in green spaces throughout the city and organizes volunteers to care for them after they are planted.
