I’ve got a Talon 11 and love it. The Raptor looks almost perfect; but where have the pockets on the shoulder straps gone?

To me this is a very useful feature, use it for for bars and gels, and it is something that sets the Talon apart from the competition. To bad to ditch this. Why?

  2. January 15th, 2010 at 09:08 | #2

    Simon,
When the Osprey Design Team went after hydration we tried to go as light and fast as possible with the pack itself as we knew that our revolutionary new HydraForm™ Reservoir and the HydraLock™ System would account for a great deal of the overall weight, thus the trimming of ounces wherever possible.

During testing, we also found the stretch woven gel pockets interfered with the hydration routing on this model and chose to instead feature the sheath pockets on the hipbelts for grab and go access.

The cool thing is that the Hydraform™ Reservoir is totally compatible with your Talon pack so you can get many of the benefits of its design and have your gel too.

    Hello.
I´m from Germany and I heared about the brandnew Raptor-Pack of Osprey a few weeks ago. No dealer (linked on your homepage) could tell me when it will be released. Maybe you can??

    With best regards from Good-Old-Germany

Is it possible to strap my shin and elbow pads to the raptor 10 or 14? Will the helmet strap support a full face helmet?

  6. February 4th, 2010 at 11:33 | #6

    Hi Michael,
Look for Manta and Raptor packs in stores by the end of February. Danke!

    Hi Ray,
Look for Manta and Raptor packs in stores by the end of February.

The product is not specifically designed for that purpose, but encourage you to have a look at the product in person to see what works with your setup. Look for Manta and Raptor packs in stores by the end of February.

    Hi Simon,

This is a popular feature on the Talon, but for the Raptor we have forgone this feature and instead placed it on the hipbelt. It features flexible, elastic fabric for easy, quick access to nibbles and gels.

Does the Raptor 6 have the stash hipbelt pockets?

  11. February 12th, 2010 at 10:18 | #11

Yes it does! I’ve stashed lots of goodies, wrappers, etc in there–easy access. Just don’t stash your keys, put those on the key clip!

  12. February 13th, 2010 at 05:58 | #12

Hi. Do you have a date for when the Osprey Raptor 14 will be possible to order?

  13. February 15th, 2010 at 14:42 | #13

By the end of February. The packs are currently shipping to dealers.

@Roland K. HI i have just bought a Raptor 14 and it’s absolutely fantastic! i’ve been on many rides mostly enduro and on the Pas du Porteils DH courses carrying the pack and it moves even less than my older Talon. the water doesn’t splash and the new airscape doesn’t let go of your back. The hip belt stash pockets work great and it is amazing how much you can stuff in the 14.
to answer the queries of some other people. Yes the pac can carry your shin, Knee and ankle guards you can bind them to the sides using one of the pulley’s and my full shin and Knee guards from fox actually fit in the bottle holders. as for a full face helmet. you can quiet easily attach the helmet by pulling the LidLock around the chin, but this method is not suitable to go riding with because then it just bounces around. But for walking around and just wanting a place to stash it is great.
I fell on the back of my pack and although my banana was squished the pack didn’t suffer there was ainy rip in the elastic fabric but it was no biggie.
Overall i think the lidlock is an award winning feature that i would maybe even like to see on the talon and for the rest osprey has once more made me an overwhelmed customer.

How flexible is the airscape panel plus the reservoir? I’m looking for a hyration pack for trail running and while these seem to be primarily aimed at the bikers with the bike tool pockets, helmet tie down etc, trail runners are specifically mentioned. The one shot I have seen that shows the curve of the airscape panel seems great while bent forward over the bars of a mountain bike but doesn’t seem right for running. Any chance to see the Raptors in action running on some trails?

    Thanks

I just purchased the Osprey Raptor 14 a couple days ago and I’ve got to say, I’m in love with this pack! The hip belt pockets work awesome for my energy gels and I love the lidlock for stashing my helmet when I go in to grab food, stop to refill water, etc.

The hydration system and magnetic clip is a fantastic feature. I love not having the hydro tube flapping around on downhill runs and there is zero sloshing once you empty the air out of the bladder. I am able to store tons of stuff in the 14, and the main stretch woven pocket is great for storing my rainshell. I’d definately recommend this pack to any serious mountain biker.

The manta states that it has an included rainfly. Does the raptor also come with a rainfly?

    Hi!,

I’ve just bought a Raptor 14, and I also convinced, this is the solution!
But I’ve got a question you could possibly help me with:
I have (I know now not too bright..) disconnected the contra-clip of the upper belt (the one with the magnet, which is adjustable), and I can’t get it back on. At least I think not without destroying the fabric with blunt force, or destitching, prying out the thread and connecting the clip back on, and then restitch.. (this latter would be my choice).
    Any tips?
    Greetings,
    Jurriaan van der Zwaard

    Hi,
I’ve re-attached the clip.. without tearing the fabric! It costs some effort (and a little vaseline), to slide it back on, but I’m ok now!
Gonna use the pack this evening on a skate trip,
    Greetings,
    Jurriaan van der Zwaard

No the Raptor series do not come with a rainfly.

  21. April 30th, 2010 at 13:37 | #21

The panel is fairly rigid because it has a regular panel much like the Talon but with the reservoir that has a framesheet. While we are primarily targeting mountain bikers for this pack, trail running is a possibility with this pack, too.

I’ve just got a Raptor 10 and went out for my first ride thing morning. Everything was fine. Just one queston? What’s the best way to clean the bladder and keep it mould / bacteria free. Do Osprey specific have cleaning kits for the bladders like a certain other brand? My concern is allowing the bladder to dry out properly after cleaning.

  28. June 1st, 2010 at 16:42 | #28

Yes. Look for our cleaning kits this fall.

We recommend hanging it–whether it be on your faucet handle overnight or something else.

    Hi,

I have a few questions regarding the Raptor 18.
Would this backpack work for day-hiking, or are there specific design elements that only make it suitable for mountainbiking? The reason I want it is that it’s so lightweight, and I love the hip belt and shoulder straps on Osprey packs. I’d mainly carry some rain gear, food, water and my camera in it, so nothing heavy. Maybe 3kg max.

Is the pack 18 litres including the space where the 3 litre reservoir goes or is it 18+3 litres?

Are the side pockets big enough to carry 2 0,5 litre bottles?

My back is about 40cm long, which pack size would I need? S/M or M/L?

    Thanks for the help.
    Sincerely
    Hilda

  30. June 29th, 2010 at 13:55 | #30

    Hi Hilda,

Yes, the Raptor 18 works for day hiking as well. That said, you might consider the Manta 20. It has a suspended mesh backpanel that allows for a bit more ventilation. The structure that supports the mesh allows for more weight carry as well, though I see you’ll be going fairly light, not including water weight.

All hydraulics packs state the entire volume, that is a Raptor 18 is 15 liters of cargo and 3 liters for the hydration.

Side pockets on both the Raptor and Manta will carry sport/bike bottles but not full 1 liter bottles.

You would take a S/M with a 40cm back length.

    Happy hiking!

Does the Raptor come with a all weather cover. Its nice to keep your camera, phone, etc dry.

  32. July 8th, 2010 at 14:51 | #32

No, no raincover on the Raptor Series, but it does have water resistant fabric. Manta Series all have raincovers.

I recently bought the raptor and love it!

I brought it on our outback adventure in Australia and in my excitment to clean it I ran hot water straight from a tap…..That was a mistake to say the least as the bladder melted together. They have really hot, hot water!
Where can I get a new one and the correct size?

I have the Raptor 14 and I love love LOVE this pack. It’s the perfect size for all the gear I need while riding, and works well for all my outdoor activities. I especially love the magnetic bite valve, so I was disappointed when I discovered that the bladder that comes with the pack is practically impossible to dry. I’ve had it hanging in various positions for about 2 weeks now, and every time I open it, more water drips out. The heavy mouth/cap causes the bladder to collapse in on itself, when it needs to stay expanded in order to dry completely. I was ecstatic when I realized that I could switch the bite valve from the Osprey bladder to another brand bladder–that way, I have a bladder I love that’s easy to fill and dry, and I can still use the magnet function with the bite valve! Definitely get this pack, especially if you own other Osprey gear; I rigged mine to attach to my Osprey Luna camping pack. But I do recommend using a different bladder.

Hi is the harness size/length much larger on a M/L?

Also, does the Osprey UL raincover in size XS fit the Raptor packs?

  37. August 16th, 2010 at 13:09 | #37

Hi, not sure where you’re located, but please refer to our dealer locator on our website. You can call them and see if they carry our reservoirs; all volumes fit 3L reservoirs EXCEPT the Raptor 6, which takes a 2L reservoir.

  38. August 16th, 2010 at 13:10 | #38

    Hi Shrikant,

The internet would be your option; you would just need to find out who ships to India. For help, refer to our dealer locator on our website.

    Good luck!

  39. August 16th, 2010 at 14:32 | #39

    Hi Kim,

We are happy you love the Raptor 14! I have found that by placing it on my kitchen faucet, the reservoir dries out just fine. However, we’ve developed a cleaning and drying kit to better aid in this process and will come to market beginning of the new year. The rigid reservoir has several advantages over other reservoirs, helping to keep the water “stable” and keep your pack shape from “barreling”. The handle is helpful for cleaning and holding the reservoir while filling it up with water.
    Cheers!

    Hi Osprey,
I’m looking at the Raptor 18 for a 24Hr adventure race with approx 60 -70km mountain biking, 25/30km running, 10/15km of kayaking. Understably it would need to be as light as possible and wil have to survive swimming across rivers without letting too much water in.Would you reccommend the raptor series or the Talon series or another type of pack?
    Cheers
    Doug

    August 17th, 2010 at 18:05 | #41

    Hi Kim,
Instead of trying to clean the bladder, I empty out excess water and then just throw mine in the freezer ASAP. This stops anything growing in it.
    Cheers
    Doug

  42. August 24th, 2010 at 15:20 | #42

    Hi Doug,
We recommend the Talon 22, with an aftermarket HydraForm reservoir to go with it. The Talon is a far more practical pack for AR, as Raptor is really targeted towards bike specific uses and does not hold odd/bulky gear as well as the Talon. Best!

  43. August 24th, 2010 at 15:23 | #43

    Hi Nick,
The sizing difference is about 2″, but go with this guide 19” = M/L. You can find out more about pack sizing and fitting here, http://www.ospreypacks.com/PackTech/SizingandFitting

Regarding the UL Raincover, the 14 and 18 would be OK, but the smaller Raptors would not be a good fit! Best!
