Ditch Your Car: National Bike Month Starts in May

March 28th, 2012

May is National Bike Month in the U.S. — when cyclists around the country commit to commuting to and from work, school and even locales such as the grocery store via bicycle as much as possible. Seeing as it hits in May, the month known for flowers rather than showers, Bike Month is the perfect opportunity to dust off or dry off your bike and simply pedal!

Need some ideas for how you can participate in and celebrate Bike Month? The League of American Bicyclists offers an entire Bike Month guide (which you can view here or download as a pdf) that provides information about how to plan for Bike Month, how to successfully implement a plan for biking to work and even a guide for planning your own Bike to Work Day event on May 18.

Many cities already host annual Bike Month or Bike to Work Month events, such as commuter competitions in the workplace where employees record their daily miles ridden for the entire month and strive to log the most. If you want to see what specific Bike Month events are being held in your city, just type in your city, state and zip here.

One independent event that coincides with Bike Month is 30 Days of Biking, an idea conceptualized by two best friends on a Minneapolis spring night that has two mantras: “Ride somewhere every day for 30 days” and “share your adventures online.” According to the 30 Days of Biking site:

The duo promoted 30 Days of Biking on Twitter throughout March, enlisting their pals to ride through April. But as their crew discussed 30 Days of Biking, other Twitterers noticed and made the pledge, too. People from not only Minneapolis but also ’round the world joined in, until 600 cyclists—most of whom our Minnesotan dudes had never met—had pledged to ride 30 days in a row. Word spread, then spread some more.

You can register to ride 30 days this May via the 30 Days of Biking website to become part of the nation-wide crew of riders who bike every day and share stories about it.

Know of some cool Bike Month events in your community? You can post them to raise awareness on the League of American Bicyclists site by going here. Whether you ride every day next month, take part in Bike to Work Day on May 18, or decide to put on your own Bike Month event, we commend you! Happy pedaling.
