Leave No Trace

July 21st, 2010

Here at Osprey we spend a lot of time outside, and when we do, we make sure to live by the ethic: Leave No Trace. We’re so committed, we print the Leave No Trace Principles right in our packs…

From Wend Magazine:

Wherever we go–camping, hiking, spelunking or riding naked singletrack trails–we commit to leave the same way we came in, with our junk in tow. That’s because to us, and most other lovers of the natural world, leaving a harsh impact on the places we play is not only stupid, it could ruin it for everyone.

The concept behind the national and international program “Leave No Trace” is similar–but maybe a little more well thought-out than our simple reasons for wanting to leave no trace. According to the program’s website, Leave No Trace is specifically “designed to assist outdoor enthusiasts with their decisions about how to reduce their impacts when they hike, camp, picnic, snowshoe, run, bike, hunt, paddle, ride horses, fish, ski or climb.” Leave No Trace serves as an educational tool for people who live and play within the outdoors–enabling them to better understand why such a common sense concept is so significantly important to live by. In fact, Leave No Trace has set in stone seven Principles to stand by, which include:

1. Plan Ahead and Prepare

2. Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces

3. Dispose of Waste Properly

4. Leave What You Find

5. Minimize Campfire Impacts

6. Respect Wildlife

7. Be Considerate of Other Visitors

So, as you adventure through the summer, make sure whatever you do, you leave no trace.
